Singer Ian ‘H’ Watkins, better known as ‘H from Steps’, will receive an 8ft statue.

The 47-year-old’s statue was announced by a community group in his hometown of Cultural Cowbridge.

The building, funded by private donations and designed by local artists, will be built outside the Little Bear Hotel in the center of the town.

The aim is to unveil the statue in June at Cowbridge Pride, an event “H” founded two years ago.

“H” – one-fifth of the All-British award-winning group pace – Also hosts a weekly show on a radio station Wales and served as a member of the local town council.

“When I got the email informing me, I fell off my chair,” Mr Watkins said.

“It was one of my proudest moments – not bad for a Welsh lad who was considered by many to be as stupid as a toilet brush.

“I love calling Cowbridge my home and I’m very passionate about doing my bit to help make it a better, more inclusive, first-class place to live.”

The five-piece pop group also consists of Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Lee Ratchford Evans and Lisa Scott Lee.

To date, they have achieved 14 consecutive top five singles and have sold a record 25 million copies.

The band originally formed in 1997 and split in 2001, but have reformed twice since then.

“H” said he was “extremely grateful” to Cowbridge Cultural Center and its donors and looked forward to “walking down the street waving to myself”.

Bethan Davies, of Cowbridge Cultural Centre, said the group felt “no one was more deserving” and had been “overwhelmed by the response”.
