According to a report, Android 15 may come with a powerful new privacy feature that can help users prevent their personal information from getting leaked while sharing their screen. The next version of Google’s smartphone operating system — expected to arrive in the second half of 2024 — may obscure parts of the screen, such as password fields or sensitive notifications, from being displayed when screen sharing is enabled. Google may also allow users to disable these protections on their Android smartphones.

According to Android Police reportThe latest Android 15 beta 1.1 release includes a new toggle in the Developer Options menu titled Disable Screen Share Protection, The toggle’s description explains that the setting will disable system protection for “sensitive app content” when a user shares their screen in the future. Unfortunately, the feature has not been enabled by Google yet on the latest Android 15 beta.

The publication also spotted a new API on the latest Android 15 beta release that allows apps with custom Virtual Views, WebViews, and Jetpack compose to access the Sensitive Content Protection feature. The feature could reportedly allow the operating system to block specific fields showing sensitive information like passwords or email addresses.

It is currently unclear how phones running Android 15 will determine which parts of the screen will be obscured during a screen sharing session. However, this feature can also protect users from scammers who convince users to share their screen to gain access to their password, one-time password (OTP), or two-factor authentication code.

The feature is reportedly disabled on Android 15 beta 1.1, meaning it can’t be tested by users who have flashed the first public beta on their Pixel phones. According to the report, it could either be enabled on Android 15 beta 2, or it could be unveiled by the company at Google I/O in May before rolling out to beta testers.
