Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir opened up about his relationship with the team’s head coach Chandrakant Pandit. Gambhir’s comments come days after former KKR star David Wiese criticized Chandrakant, calling his coaching style “aggressive”. Gambhir, who served as LSG’s mentor during IPL 2021 and 2022, joins KKR in the same role this season. Talking about his brief association with a well-known coach in the Indian domestic circuit, Gambhir said he did not hear any criticism about him.

Under the guidance of Chandrakant, Mumbai Vidarbha Madhya Pradesh achieved great success in the Ranji Trophy. He has been associated with KKR as the team’s coach since the 2023 season.

“There were certain issues going on behind the scenes with the team. Guys weren’t happy with certain things that were going on and a lot of times it was tough in the dressing room. There was a new coach who came in and he liked to do things a certain way and that was with the players. It just wasn’t to their liking,” David Weiss told the Hitman for Hire: A Year in the Life of a Franchise Cricketer podcast.

“Everyone is frustrated because there have been a lot of changes and the coach has brought what he thinks will bring success. But as an overseas player, they get restless at times. He is considered a quite aggressive coach in India, A strict coach. “Overseas players who play around the world don’t need someone to come in and tell him how to behave, what to wear and what to do, and I’m cool with that, but some players are more stubborn than me,” he added.

However, Gambhir and Chandrakant’s experiences so far have definitely been different.

“I haven’t heard any criticism. It’s still early days and I have a really good working relationship with him. Hopefully that will continue. Whatever is said, I don’t know anything about it. I think he’s already in the first class. He’s had considerable success in cricket and that’s why he got this opportunity and it’s been a pleasure working with him so far,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by The Times.

Earlier, KKR’s star all-rounder Andre Russell also backed the coach, saying “he is doing a fantastic job”.
