59-year-old woman dies after mentally ill son attacked her after calling her

The incident took place at Vipul Greens apartment complex in Gurgaon

Gurgaon:

A 59-year-old woman died after her mentally ill son stabbed her and then set her Gurgaon apartment on fire, police said. It is understood the 27-year-old attacked his mother because she called him “crazy”. He has been detained.

Ranu Shah lives with her husband and son in Vipul Greens, a luxury apartment complex in Sector 48, Gurgaon. Her son, Atrish, was in long-term treatment for mental illness and neighbors said he often argued with his parents.

Neighbors discovered their apartment was on fire late last night. Firefighters and police were called, who broke in and rescued Ms Shah, who was badly burned. She was taken to a nearby private hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

According to police, a preliminary investigation found that Atrish was often agitated and attacked his mother. Ms Shah reportedly called him “crazy” during an argument yesterday. This triggered the 27-year-old, who stabbed his mother multiple times. He then set fire to their home. Ms Shah’s husband was away when the incident occurred.

Senior police officer Mayank Gupta said the man’s mental health would be assessed before police decide how to proceed with the investigation, The Times of India reported.
