Greater Noida driver falls asleep at steering wheel, 1 killed, 2 injured

A speeding car allegedly rammed into a group of people on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, killing one person and injuring two others, police said on Monday. They said the driver of the car, who was detained by police, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the accident.

“Three men were waiting along YXP when the incident took place in Jewar area on Sunday night. A Maruti Swift car registered in Delhi hit the three people and they were rushed to a nearby private hospital where one of them was injured, Others are receiving treatment,” a local police officer said.

According to police, the man was identified as Suresh Singh (37), a native of Jewarjahangirpur. Police said a case was booked under Indian Penal Code Section 304A (causing death by negligence) against Delhi Bank official driver Raja Kumar.

“During investigation, the driver claimed that he fell asleep while driving on the highway and hence the accident occurred,” the official told Press Trust of India (PTI). He said the court had granted bail to the accused.

Gautam Buddh Nagar (consisting of Noida City and Greater Noida City) witnessed 1,176 road accidents in 2023, resulting in 470 deaths and 858 injuries. According to official figures, a total of 437 people were killed and 856 injured in the region in 2022.
