Brussels:
Alphabet’s Google on Tuesday outlined changes to search results and new tools for app developers to promote their products on third-party apps and rival app stores as it complies with landmark EU tech rules aimed at curbing the power of big tech companies. part of the effort.
Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Meta Platforms and TikTok owner ByteDance have been designated as gatekeepers controlling access to their platforms by millions of users and businesses and must comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on March 7.
The company announced some changes in January that would only apply to European users, then tweaked some of them based on feedback from EU antitrust regulators, users and app developers.
Google said in a blog post that the change in search results will mean more traffic to large intermediaries and aggregators and less traffic to hotels, airlines, merchants and restaurants.
Users will be asked to agree to allow Google to share their data across Google products and services.
App developers will be able to use alternative billing systems instead of just Google Play’s, while a new program will allow them to directly onboard European users to promote their products outside of their apps.
Google will also launch data portability software in Europe this week, making it easier for developers to transfer user data to third-party apps or services.
