Google is reportedly working on bringing a new feature to its Phone app for Pixel users that will let them look up unknown numbers to identify themselves. The feature, called Lookup, was earlier introduced to Pixel devices in Japan through a feature launch in March, but it was not released outside the region. According to the report, Google may now aim to bring the feature to smartphones around the world. Notably, a report last month claimed that Google was also testing a new Phone app feature that would integrate WhatsApp call history and carrier calls on the same screen.

according to a Report Spotted by PiunikaWeb (via AssembleDebug), a string of code corresponding to the feature was discovered in the Google Phone app beta version 127.0.620688474. When users click on a number that’s not saved in their contacts, they’ll see a “Find” feature. It uses web searches to find the origin of phone numbers.

According to a screenshot shared by a tipster on X (formerly Twitter), look up icon appears in Add contact, informationand history icon as the fourth item in the list. The report highlights that clicking on the feature opens a bottom panel that allows users to select apps that can look up numbers on the web. Google Search is one of them, and when you use it, the feature allows you to search directly on the web.

This feature is suitable for business-related phone numbers since these are likely to be found on the internet. It doesn’t appear to apply to numbers used by individuals as they are unlikely to be publicly available on the web. Additionally, the feature is not currently integrated with any caller ID apps, such as Truecaller, which is more focused on identifying phone numbers that belong to individuals.

There’s no word yet on when this feature will be rolled out to Pixel smartphone users around the world, but reports speculate that it could launch alongside a June feature launch. Also, like most Pixel-exclusive features, it’s unlikely to roll out to Android smartphone owners anytime soon.
