An Orlando, Florida, man was sentenced to life in prison for trying to kill a police officer.

The incident occurred on September 25, 2021. Two uniformed Orlando police officers were injured in a fight with McLeish. William McLeish captured the police on camera as he leaned his mobile phone against a rubbish bin before he began the attack.

A struggle broke out as another officer and a witness tried to subdue him. McLeish bit the second officer, gouged one of his eyes and tried to take an officer’s gun away. When an officer tried to call for backup, McLeish ripped off his radio.

He resisted arrest until more police arrived minutes later and took him into custody.

According to officials, McLeish live-streamed the attack on Facebook.

Investigators found a previously recorded video on his phone in which he said, “I’m going to kill him right there,” suggesting he was premeditated.

The 29-year-old man represented himself in court, and within an hour, a jury found him guilty of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, according to Ninth Circuit State’s Attorney Andrew Bain.

McLeish gave a brief opening statement in court. “This was not my doing and the evidence was tampered with,” he said.

In addition to attempted murder, McLeish was convicted of resisting an officer with violence, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer causing serious bodily injury, depriving an officer of his protection/means of communication and attempting to deprive an officer of his protection/means of communication .

McLeish’s conduct during and after the attack, including his bragging in prison, contributed to the jury’s decision and his subsequent life sentence.
