Most government offices remain closed in this Manipur district following boycott call

Despite warnings from the state home department that “no work, no pay” rule will be enforced if employees go on unauthorized leaves, government offices in Kuki-dominated Churachandpur recorded thin attendance on Monday.

Churachandpur-based organization Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) has urged government employees in the district not to report for work from Monday over the suspension of a policeman who was reportedly seen in a video accompanying armed men.

“Many of the employees who had gone to the office returned after not finding other employees,” an official from Churachandpur district told news agency PTI.

However, schools, markets and private sector establishments remained open and were not affected.

The tribal body had said, “State government employees should avoid going to office…If any untoward incident occurs, it will be their sole responsibility.”

Manipur government chief secretary, Vineet Joshi, in an order on Sunday directed all government employees to attend offices and in case of any violation of orders, the person concerned, without any exception, will be prosecuted under relevant provision of law. Will go.

The order said that all Central and State Government officials and management officials of institutions, establishments and autonomous bodies have also been advised to ensure strict attendance of staff and students as usual.

The Chief Secretary said, all district magistrates and superintendents of police of all districts will take necessary action to implement the orders.

Manipur has been in the grip of caste violence since May last year after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for granting them Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
