The Scottish Conservative politician praised the hard work of fire crews but said vehicle access issues at the front of the building were making operations more difficult.

Firefighters had to move the ladder to the front and place it on the balcony, he said.

Mr Simpson added: “They had managed to get around to the back. I saw a turntable ladder spraying water into the apartment from there but they couldn’t get into the front properly.

“They have entered some apartments and sprayed water from balconies but now the fire is still raging.

“The fire department should be able to drive to the front of the building and obtain a turntable ladder.
