A 26-year-old woman, working with an IT head, was allegedly shot dead by her boyfriend in Maharashtra’s Pune district, police said on Sunday.

They said the boyfriend, identified as Rishabh Nigam, was apparently upset that the victim, Vandana Dwivedi, had recently started avoiding him.

He said that the incident took place at a lodge in Hinjewadi area of Pimpri Chinchwad on Saturday and the police got information about it on Sunday morning.

According to a senior police officer, Nigam was caught in Mumbai. He has been arrested under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.

Police said Nigam and Dwivedi, both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, were in a relationship since 2013. She worked in a big IT firm in Hinjewadi, while her boyfriend lived in UP.

The officer said that Nigam was apparently angry as the deceased had recently started avoiding him.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bapu Bangar said, a few years ago, he was beaten up in his hometown and he suspected the deceased’s role in that attack.

Nigam had come from UP and had checked in to the lodge on January 25. Next day the deceased also joined him.

According to initial information, he shot the woman on Saturday night and fled away. “We came to know about the incident this morning,” Bangar said.

CCTV footage of the lodge shows Nigam leaving the premises on Saturday night.

The man has been arrested and further investigation is underway, including the exact motive and where the gun was purchased, the officer said.
