Fact check: Did Ranveer Singh criticize PM Modi over inflation?

Congress spokesperson Sujata Paul posted the video on her verified X account.

A video of actor Ranveer Singh criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi over unemployment and inflation was a deepfake created using an AI voice clone of the Bollywood actor.

BOOM found that the video had been digitally altered with synthesized voice clones, and in the original video, which was interviewed by Asia News International (ANI), the actor praised the Prime Minister and said that the latter was celebrating India’s cultural heritage.

In the edited 42-second video, Mr Singh said: “This is what Modi is about. He is about celebrating our sad lives, our fears, our unemployment and inflation. Because where our India is now going The pace of our times is unjust… so we should never stop demanding our development and justice – that’s why we must think and vote.”

The video ends with a message urging people to vote for Congress.

Earlier this week, several Congress workers shared another AI voice clone of actor Aamir Khan targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress spokesperson Sujata Paul posted the video on her verified X account with the caption “Vote Nyaya (Justice) Vote Congress”.

BOOM also analyzed the videos using Itisaar, a deepfake detection tool developed at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur. The tool determined that the video contained an AI voice clone.

The mouth movements and sounds in the video are out of sync. Additionally, the voiceover seems erratic. BOOM also spoke with experts at Contrails AI to test the video through their detection tool. Testing determined that “clear audio spoofing was detected on potentially tampered clips, while the frames appeared to be completely authentic.”

I have been a devotee of Lord Shiva all my life and this was my first time visiting Kashgar and I wanted to bring my mother and wife there. Delighted. When devotees of Lord Shiva arrive at the Shiva city, you can imagine that there is a unique energy when we visit the Kashi temple… There is a different vibration and frequency when Panditji is reciting the mantra. During the process, everyone was attracted by this energy, their eyes sparkled, and there was an aura around them… raising their hands and chanting “Har Har Mahadev”.

The actor further said, “I am extremely happy to see this. This is Modi’s vision to celebrate our rich cultural heritage, history and heritage. India is modernizing at an astonishing pace but we can never forget Our roots and that’s why the development of heritage is so important – Kashgar is a place older than history and tradition and it’s absolutely a miracle to witness its development. This place is an absolute miracle and I’m happy to be here. We saw and welcomed some foreigners inside.”
