New Delhi:
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s central election committee held its second meeting on Monday to decide on the party’s candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, with senior Indian leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrutinizing the possible lists in several states, to make the final choice.
States where discussions are expected to take place include Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana.
Ahead of the meeting, Haryana Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Dushyant Chautala held talks with BJP chief JP Nadda over the seat allocation issue between the two allies in the state.
Although a section of Haryana BJP leaders have been opposing the alliance, the party appears to be weighing its options. The BJP won all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the previous elections in 2019. The BJP formed an alliance with the party after the assembly elections.
The BJP has joined forces with various political parties across the country ahead of the general election, expected to be held in April-May, as it hopes to secure a larger majority.
The Telugu Democratic Alliance is the latest party to join the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, which has also been in talks with Odisha’s ruling Biju BJP.
The BJP has so far nominated candidates for 195 seats spread across 16 states and two Union Territories. However, two of them, Bhojpuri singer-actor Pawan Singh and Upendra Rawat, quit after their selection sparked controversy.
The party’s think tank, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Nadda, has held a series of meetings with state leaders to prepare a possible list before the Central Election Commission takes a final decision.
