The rising trend of “ghost jobs” has attracted widespread attention after one social media user shared a personal anecdote. These positions are “open” on the company’s website but don’t actually exist.

The user, Maureen W Clough, shared a message on Thread in which she revealed that the company’s human resources staff asked her to continue interviewing candidates for ghost jobs.

Sharing the details, she wrote: “There’s a super cool new trend in tech: ghost jobs… I’m a hiring manager with a new position to fill. As I go through this process with candidates, A friend said, “Hey, did you know about the hiring freeze? “I went to HR and he confirmed…then told me to go ahead with the interview because it “might” open up again. No. I refuse to waste the candidate’s and my own time.”

What is a ghost job?

Ghost jobs are vacant positions that a company advertises but has no intention of filling. The reasons for this may vary from company to company.

One possible explanation is that the company may not be able to budget for hiring new employees during that particular period, while another reason may be to assess the talent pool available in the market.

There is also the possibility that these “vacancies” have been advertised for an upcoming position in advance, but the position is currently unavailable or simply does not exist.

Many companies that have frozen their hiring processes still have job listings.

The rise in employee resignations during the pandemic and its economic uncertainty may have increased the number of ghost jobs, according to a Harvard Business School study.

The study also added that this could be due to companies being uncertain about the future and hiring new employees.

It’s worth noting that some ghost job listings don’t even have a job description but include a long list of benefits to convince candidates to apply.

How to tell if the job is real?

A genuine job posting will always include specific details about position expectations, qualifications, and responsibilities. So if a candidate encounters a vague job description that reads like a generic template, this is your clue.

When a candidate applies for a job and doesn’t get a response for weeks or even months in some cases, it means he/she is stuck with a ghost job.

It can also be a warning sign if a candidate encounters the same job opening repeatedly over a long period of time.
