Karachi:

Armed Baloch terrorists tried to infiltrate a major naval air base in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, but security forces foiled the attack and killed at least six people.

Monday night’s attack occurred in Turbat, a volatile area of the sparsely populated province.

Makran Commissioner Saeed Ahmed Umlani told the media that security forces foiled an armed terrorist attack targeting the PNS Siddiq Naval Air Base, one of the largest naval air stations in the country.

“The armed men launched attacks from three sides of the airport boundary, but security forces responded immediately and thwarted their attempts to infiltrate the airport,” he said.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots and explosions throughout the night.

A security official who spoke on condition of anonymity said six terrorists were killed during the operation and they were unable to cause any damage to the air base or aircraft.

The official said there were no reports of damage to sensitive naval facilities.

The banned Balochistan Liberation Army claimed its Majeed Brigade was behind the attack.

This is the third major attack on security forces and facilities in Balochistan this year. The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility. The first two attacks were also repelled by security forces.

Earlier this year, security forces were attacked in the town of Mach, killing at least 10 people, but security forces foiled an attempt to break into Mach prison.

The BLA also claimed responsibility for an attack on the Gwadar Port Authority building on March 24. Security forces killed eight members of the banned separatist group in gunfire.

Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan, is home to a long-running violent insurgency. Baloch rebel groups have previously launched attacks against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project worth $60 billion.

The BLA accuses China and Islamabad of exploiting the resource-rich province, a charge the authorities deny.

The BLA’s Majeed Brigade, formed in 2011, is a particularly lethal guerrilla group within the BLA.

It is said that the organization also maintains shelters in the border areas of Pakistan and Iran.

The brigade is the suicide squad of the Pakistan Liberation Army and its main targets are security forces and Chinese interests in Pakistan. It also claimed responsibility for a suicide attack outside the Confucius Institute at the University of Karachi in April 2022.
