EU to follow US with new sanctions on Iranian drone and missile producers

The EU has imposed sanctions on Iran for supplying drones to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Brussels:

EU leaders agreed on Wednesday to impose new sanctions on Iranian drone and missile producers over Tehran’s unprecedented weekend attack on Israel, EU President Charles Michel said.

“Our decision to impose sanctions on Iran is the clear signal we want to send,” the European Council president told an EU summit in Brussels.

“The idea is to target companies that need drones and missiles.”

Iran launched an unprecedented drone and missile attack on Israel over the weekend, but the damage was minimal after most of the missiles were intercepted.

Tehran launched its first direct attack on Israeli territory in response to a deadly attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which was widely blamed on Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would decide how to respond to the Iranian attack as global powers called for restraint to avoid escalation.

In a statement at the summit, EU leaders urged “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid taking any actions that may aggravate regional tensions.”

The EU has already imposed sanctions on Iran over its supply of drones to Russia for its involvement in the war in Ukraine, but has done little to sever ties between Tehran and Moscow.
