The European Union on Friday imposed sanctions on armed factions of Hamas and Islamic Jihad over “widespread” sexual violence during an Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
The group said militants from the two Palestinian groups, which are on the EU’s terrorism blacklist, “systematically commit widespread sexual and gender-based violence and use it as weapons of war”.
The decision to impose sanctions is part of an agreement between EU countries that will now blacklist violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, killing 1,170 people, mostly civilians, and triggered the Gaza war, according to Israeli data.
The EU said abuses by Hamas militants included “rape and subsequent murder of minor girls, mutilation of corpses and genital mutilation”.
It also accused the attackers of “targeted abductions of women and girls.”
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,634 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the region’s health ministry. The death toll updated by the Ministry of Health on Friday showed at least 89 more deaths than the previous day.
