“Ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, MS Dhoni handed over the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings to batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ruturaj has been captain since 2019 He has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings since 2016 and has played 52 IPL matches during this period,” CSK informed through an official statement on Thursday.
He led CSK in 212 IPL matches, winning 128 and losing 82 matches. Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020 after leading the team to win the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Cup.
Last year, Dhoni led the Chennai side to a record-equalling fifth IPL title against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The 42-year-old remains one of the most respected faces in Indian cricket, with a fan following that rivals that of some of the current stars, and has been a fixture in Chennai since the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008.
