Former US national security adviser John Bolton has harshly criticized Donald Trump, saying his former boss “didn’t have the brains” to become a dictator, while also questioning his professional background, commenting that “he’s a property developer.” For God’s sake”.

The former president fired Bolton in September 2019 because of their deep differences over Iran, Afghanistan and numerous other global challenges. Bolton and Trump have often clashed over foreign policy issues, with the latter accusing the former NSA of not getting along with others in the administration and disagreeing with him on policy.

Exclusive interview with a French newspaper le figaroBolton, 75, was asked whether Trump, the only contender for the Republican nomination in this year’s presidential election, has authoritarian tendencies.

To which he responded: “He has no brains! He’s just a property developer, for God’s sake.”

Bolton’s comments came months after Trump said in December 2023 that he wanted to be a dictator “one day” during a speech at the New York Young Republican Club’s 111th annual gala.

“You know why I want to be a dictator? Because I want a wall and I want to drill, drill, drill,” he said of a wall on Mexico’s southern border and drilling in the United States.

The former president has also praised authoritarian leaders in the past, including North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who met with him earlier this month. guardian Newspaper reports.

during the interview le figaroBolton was also asked what the consequences would be for U.S. foreign policy if Trump returns to the White House after the November election.

He said it was a mistake to think of Trump as a “normal politician.”

“Donald Trump has no political philosophy, he does not engage in policy analysis or decision-making as we usually use those terms. For him, everything is incidental, anecdotal, transactional. Everything depends Facts.’ The question is how this will benefit ‘Donald Trump’ — politically or personally,” Bolton said.

“When people talk about his policies, they’re talking about something that doesn’t exist. Trump made thousands of decisions during his presidency,” he added.

The former NSA chief also said it was “very likely” that he would leave NATO if his former boss was re-elected.

“When Trump has an idea, he returns to it again and again, gets distracted, forgets, but eventually comes back to the idea and acts on it. That’s why leaving NATO is a real possibility. A lot. People think it’s just a negotiating tool, but I don’t think so,” Bolton said.

Trump has been an outspoken critic of the military alliance while in office and has repeatedly threatened to withdraw from the alliance. He has cut defense funding for NATO and often complains that the United States pays more than its fair share.

The former president faced widespread criticism in February after he complained that NATO members were “in arrears” with payments and recounted past conversations he had with the leader of “a major power” about a possible Russian attack.

“No, I’m not going to protect you. In fact, I’m going to encourage them (Russia) to do whatever they want. You’ve got to pay a price,” Trump said, addressing the unnamed leader.
