Scientists at England’s Cambridge University have exposed the face of a 75,000-year-old Neanderthal woman.

“The skulls of Neanderthals and humans look very different from our own,” Cambridge paleontologist Emma Pomeroy said in the report. “Neanderthal skulls have huge ridges on the eyebrows and lack a chin, the mid-face is raised resulting in a more prominent nose. But the reconstructed face shows that those differences were not so serious in life.

Given the similarities with humans, “It is probably easy to see how interbreeding occurred between our species,” he added, “to the extent that almost all people alive today have Neanderthal DNA.”

According to the Smithsonian, Neanderthals were found between 700,000 and 300,000 years ago, a species of early humans who evolved from the same common ancestor from which Homo sapiens, or modern humans, came into existence.
