New Delhi:
From impersonating a judge and granting bail during a trial to stealing luxury cars for personal commuting, Dhani Ram Mittal has committed several shenanigans in his decades-long criminal career.
He died Thursday at the age of 85 due to health problems, police said.
Mittal has been jailed more than 90 times after being named in more than 150 theft cases in Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab and Rajasthan.
“His criminal list is long and he was directly involved in more than 1,000 cases of theft, fraud, impersonation and forgery in his lifetime,” said a senior police officer who asked not to be named.
According to police sources, Mittal was first involved in a cheating case in 1964 and has not stopped since then.
A senior officer of the Delhi Police recalled that Mittal stole the car from the parking lot of Jhajar Court in Haryana for personal use.
“When we read his criminal file, we learned that he managed to pose as a judge in Jhajar for several days and order the release of long-serving convicts,” he said.
The official said Mittal was well-educated, having obtained a first-class bachelor’s degree from Rohtak University and later an LLB from Rajasthan.
“After completing his LLB, he worked as a clerk for different advocates. But he used to steal cars for personal pleasure. He also forged documents and got a job as a station master, working from 1968 to 1974. He He died on Thursday as he fell ill and suffered cardiac arrest,” the official said.
In 2016, the 77-year-old was arrested for stealing a car in Rani Bagh.
“This is his 95th arrest,” the officer said.
Mittal was drained by his sons at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat.
