An MP facing accusations of misuse of campaign funds has quit the Conservative Party and said he will not contest the next general election.

Claims emerged earlier this week The Times said Mark Menzies used political donations to pay for medical bills and paid bribes to “bad guys” who reportedly locked him in his flat and demanded thousands of pounds for his release.

The backbench MP for Lancashire Fylde disputed the allegations but was suspended while the investigation was carried out.

Menzies said in a statement: “It has been a huge privilege to represent the people of Fylde since 2010, but due to the pressure on myself and my elderly mother, I have decided to resign from the Conservative Party and will not remain. In the Conservative Party.” The upcoming general election.
