Indian athlete Devendra Jajhariya was elected as the new president of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) on Thursday. The 42-year-old javelin thrower, who has won three medals at the Paralympics, including two gold and one silver, was elected to the organization’s top job, succeeding Paralympic silver medalist Deepa Ma Deepa Malik. The sports ministry had suspended government recognition of PCI in February this year “due to the delay in holding elections after the expiration of the PCI executive committee’s term” and non-compliance with its guidelines.
The sports ministry said the PCI’s decision to hold elections on March 28 was “deliberate, intentional and without any valid reason”.
After the suspension, the PCI announced that the elections will be held on March 9 in New Delhi.
Last Tuesday, the sports ministry revoked the suspension by the Paralympic Council of India (PCI) with immediate effect.
Expressing the reasons for its decision in a letter to the Indian Paralympic Committee, which will host the 2024 World Shooting Paralympic World Cup later this month, the Sports Ministry said the main reasons for the suspension were being addressed.
