Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was surrounded by a mob at a roadside eatery in Nagaon district of Assam on Sunday evening. The incident occurred when Gandhi and some other leaders had stopped at the restaurant in Ambagan on their way to their night halt at Rupohi, about 10 km from the spot.

The crowd raised slogans against the MP and also displayed placards with messages like ‘Anaya Yatra’ and ‘Rakibul go back’, referring to Samaguri Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain.

Security personnel escorted Gandhi and other leaders out of the restaurant.

Eyewitnesses said that in another incident of attack on vehicles of party workers returning from the rally, three members of the student wing were admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

Earlier in the day, state Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Bora was attacked in two separate incidents in Sonitpur district and senior central leader Jairam Ramesh’s car was attacked from where the yatra entered Nagaon.

Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Gandhi reached Central Assam district during the day. The leaders addressed a public rally in Kaliyabor in the afternoon, where Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge was also present.
