The FM announced the extension of the scheme ahead of the country’s vote, which is likely to be scheduled for April-May this year.

Singh told News18: “‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’ is not just a slogan of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. It means real benefits to the people. It is an inclusive budget with welfare schemes on one side and welfare schemes on the other. There are expenses.”

News18 reported on January 5 that the Center may extend the next phase of PMAY-G, its flagship rural housing scheme, to the next five-year period after March 2024 and the announcement may come ahead of the LS polls release.

How the program actually works

The scheme, implemented by the Union Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), provides assistance in building puka houses and basic facilities to eligible beneficiaries in rural areas. The union cabinet last extended this deadline beyond March 2021 to March 31, 2024 to complete the target of constructing houses of Rs 295 crore.

As the MoRD said in Parliament in December last year, against the housing target of Rs 295 crore, states and Union Territories have sanctioned over Rs 294 crore to beneficiaries as against Rs 251 crore as on December 7 Completed. 2023.

The Center in December had asked ministries, departments and other executive agencies about all welfare schemes approaching their deadline at the end of the financial year 2023-24.

PMAY-G, which came into effect from April 1, 2016, provides assistance to eligible rural households with an overall target of constructing pucca houses of Rs 295 crore.

In an election year, the current government is unable to come up with a complete budget, so the interim budget proposed covers the government’s expenditure and revenue in the short term. The next full budget will be tabled in July, once a new government is in place after the election.
