Turkey’s Interior Ministry confirmed that a cable car accident occurred in Turkey’s southern Antalya province, killing one person and injuring ten others.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when a cable car carriage collided with a broken pole, leaving twenty-four carriages suspended in the air.

Despite constant rescue efforts, more than 60 people were still trapped in nine huts 16 hours later, and a total of 112 people were eventually rescued.

Chairman of the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, Oke Memis, assured reporters that none of those awaiting rescue were seriously injured.

The rescue operation involves seven helicopters and more than 500 personnel and is aimed to be completed before sunset.

Video footage released by the interior ministry showed rescuers using safety ropes to enter the trapped cabin.

The cable car has 36 carriages, each accommodating 6 people, and it usually takes 9 minutes to ascend the Tunektepe facility to enjoy panoramic views of Antalya city.
