The brother of a young mother who was stabbed multiple times while pushing her child through Bradford city center has told how her death left the family heartbroken.

Kulsuma Akter, 27, was ambushed in broad daylight as she walked through the Westgate area with her baby in a pram on Saturday.

Paramedics were called at 3.21pm but despite their best efforts she suffered multiple stab wounds to the neck and was pronounced dead at hospital.

Her brother Hussein told Mail online: “We can’t even speak and have been crying since this happened.

“We had to call my mother in Bangladesh to tell her the news. Can you imagine what this meant to us? I couldn’t believe my sister was dead.”

Habibur Masum, 25, was arrested on suspicion of Ms Ackert’s murder in the Aylesbury area of ​​Buckinghamshire on Tuesday following a four-day manhunt.

Her cousin Aftab Miah told the BBC that her mother had been “crying non-stop” since receiving news of her daughter’s death.

Mr Mia told the broadcaster: “She (Ms Ackert) was very caring, humble and had a great personality. She used to make people laugh. She was a wonderful lady.”

He added: “Her mother in Bangladesh kept crying. I talked to (her) a lot yesterday and she kept crying and kept mentioning her name.”

He revealed that before coming to the UK, Ms Akhter lived in the village of Singakachi in Silar province in eastern Bangladesh. While her mother still lives there, her father is from Saudi Arabia.

He added: “This family is scattered across the world and can’t even be reunited at this very difficult time. I can’t put into words the pain they are going through. It’s horrific.

Ms Ackert’s child was safe and was not injured in the incident.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a report had been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to officers’ contact with Ms Ackert before her death.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in Cheshire on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major investigations team, said: “This was a tragic incident in which a mother lost her life in the most horrific circumstances.

“We understand this is causing great concern to the local community. The local community police team is patrolling the area to provide comfort services to the community.

“We would like to thank Thames Valley Police for their support and assistance in this matter.”
