Brest defeated Lorient 1-0 in the Brittany derby on Sunday to regain second place in Ligue 1 and move on to qualify for the Champions League. Former Lyon and Rennes winger Romain del Castillo scored the visitors’ only goal of the game with a low shot into the far corner of the net with four minutes remaining. Brest held on to win despite Bilal Brahimi being sent off in injury time as they returned to winning ways after picking up just one point from their last two games. The result moved them back into second place, above Monaco who won 5-2 in Metz on Saturday.
Brest, which has never qualified for Europe, is four points ahead of fourth-placed Lille, who beat Lens 2-1 on Friday.
The top three teams in Ligue 1 will automatically qualify for next season’s expanded Champions League, with the fourth place entering the preliminaries.
Victory at Brest also saw them close the gap on leaders Paris Saint-Germain to nine points before the defending champions face arch-rivals Marseille later on Sunday.
