Lok Sabha elections- Priyanka Gandhi Vadra quotes Ramayana, attacks BJP: Lord Ram fights for truth

'When Lord Ram fought for truth...': Priyanka Gandhi at India Bloc rally

Priyanka Gandhi says Election Commission should ensure a level playing field for all political parties

New Delhi:

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today invoked Ramayan to attack a massive opposition rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan Bharatiya Janata Party. “I have been coming to Ramlila Maidan since my childhood. Every year the statue of Ravan is set on fire. When I was a child, I used to come here with my grandmother Indira Ji and she used to narrate to me “ Ramayana,” she said.

Taking a jibe at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, she said: “Those in power today call themselves Ram bhakts. As I sit here, I think I should say something to them. I want to remind them of this 1,000-year-old story and the story behind it.” When Lord Ram fought for truth, he had no strength, resources, or even a chariot. Ravan has chariots, resources, army and gold but Lord Ram has truth, hope, faith, love, kindness, humility, patience, courage and truth. I would like to tell those in power that the message of Lord Ram’s life is that power is not permanent and arrogance will be shattered. “

The opposition India Bloc on Sunday urged the Election Commission to ensure fair play in the Lok Sabha polls and asserted that despite the “undemocratic hurdles” created by the BJP, the alliance was committed to fighting, winning and saving democracy in the country.

She said the Election Commission should ensure a level playing field for all political parties in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress leader demanded that the poll panel should stop actions taken by the Enforcement Directorate, CBI and Income Tax department against the opposition parties to adversely affect the elections, adding that the immediate release of former Jharkhand Chief Minister He Mant Soren and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

While reading out the India Group’s demand at the rally, she said that efforts to forcibly destroy the finances of the opposition parties should be stopped immediately during the elections.

The opposition alliance has also demanded the setting up of a Special Investigation Bureau, overseen by the Supreme Court, to probe what they say is the BJP’s “extortion” of funds through the electoral bonds scheme.

Last month, the Supreme Court struck down the politically funded electoral bond scheme, saying it violated the constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression and the right to information.

Addressing the rally, Priyanka Gandhi said the Bloc was committed to fighting, winning and saving democracy in India despite the “undemocratic hurdles” created by the BJP.
