A plane carrying Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa aborted its landing on Friday in the city of Victoria Falls, where he was due to attend an international conference, but authorities received a “credible bomb” Gun Threat” email.
Presidential spokesman George Charamba issued a statement confirming authorities had received a bomb scare email at Victoria Falls Airport.
“As a precautionary measure, the country’s security systems are now on high alert and the source and credibility of the information are also under investigation. … The country is urged to remain calm while the investigation is ongoing, and following the conclusion of the investigation, the government Relevant departments will announce the results of the investigation,” the statement said.
The statement continued that Mnangagwa “was due to address a conference in the top resort city of Victoria Falls this morning, but he has had to put his trip on hold due to investigations that are already underway.”
Clement Mukwasi, chairman of the Zimbabwe Tourism and Safari Operators Employers Association, confirmed the news of the bomb scare.
“It looks like the panic is limited to the airport,” he told VOA in Victoria Falls. “The actual activities at Victoria Falls have not been affected at all. Visitors are happy. They are carrying out activities as usual. All scheduled activities are going on. And we do not see any police presence.”
Victoria Falls is a top tourist destination on the Zambian border. The city is approximately 900 kilometers (560 miles) from Harare, where most international conferences are held. Mnangagwa was due to attend the closing ceremony of the International Renewable Energy Conference in Southern Africa on Friday.
