The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday announced a list of seven candidates for the upcoming biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, repeating three candidates, including senior leader Vijay Bahadur Pathak Bahadur Pathak, whose term ends in May.
Vijay Bahadur Pathak is the vice-president of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The list released by state general secretary Arun Singh includes former ministers Mahendra Kumar Singh and Ashok Kataria, who will also seek re-election.
The four new faces are state vice-president Santosh Singh, party western regional chairman Mohit Beniwal, Jhansi Ram Tirath Singh Jhansi Ram Tirath Singhal) former mayor and UP Dharmendra Singh joint media chief.
Particularly in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, attempts have been made to achieve caste and regional balance through the election of Legislative Council candidates, party insiders said.
The terms of the 13 members of the Legislative Council will expire in May this year. The party is believed to have left three seats open for its allies, while the PPP has also announced its candidates.
According to the notification, nominations will be open until March 11 and the last date to withdraw nominations is March 14. If needed, voting will take place on March 21.
The counting of votes will take place after 5 p.m. that day.
