Gurgaon:

Ten people from three families, including three children, ate buckwheat flour or “Kutu’ Officials said on Saturday that this was part of their Mahashivratri fast.

They were immediately taken to a city hospital, police said.

Police said the food safety department has launched an investigation into the incident and has collected samples from shops selling the flour.

According to a complaint filed by Hansraj Kasana, a resident of Rajiv Nagar, he purchased buckwheat flour from a nearby grocery store due to the Mahashivratri fast.

The complainant said his son Nitin, daughter-in-law Sonam and mother Rajwati fell ill after eating dumplings made from it and were admitted to the civil hospital.

“Seven people, including three children, from two other families living nearby also fell ill after consuming buckwheat flour. Doctors said it could be food poisoning,” he added.

Following the complaint, a team from the food safety department conducted a surprise inspection of the store and took samples for testing.

“Our team has collected samples of buckwheat flour, sugar and honey from grocery stores. These samples will be sent to the laboratory. Action will be taken based on the reports,” said food safety department officer Dr Ramesh Chauhan.
