The BBC has been forced to defend its coverage of the Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnosis as “excessive and insensitive” after complaints.
Kate revealed that she was being treated for the disease in an emotional video posted on March 22, telling others dealing with the disease after weeks of wild online speculation about her health and whereabouts. Those who struggle “you are not alone”.
The broadcaster, which aired the full video, said it was “mindful” of how it reported it and would not speculate on details that had not yet been made public.
“We played in full the Princess of Wales’ highly personal video message, in which she spoke directly to the public about her cancer diagnosis,” the company said in a statement on Friday in response to the complaints.
“Our coverage reflects the importance of this story and the outpouring of support for the princess from around the world.
“We explained to viewers what is known about Catherine’s condition but did not speculate on details that have not yet been made public.”
The company detailed its reporting approach and said it always “carefully considers” the editorial decisions it makes.
“Our reporting makes clear that this is a difficult time for the Princess and other members of the Royal Family; we always take care to handle our reporting with sensitivity,” the BBC said.
“As part of our analysis, we investigated the intense speculation surrounding the Princess’ health in previous weeks.
“We also reported on Catherine’s privacy request and detailed Kensington Palace’s statement that the princess has a right to privacy related to her medical issues.
“We always carefully consider the editorial decisions we make.
“While we have a responsibility to cover stories that are of interest to our audiences, we recognize that not everyone will appreciate the approach we take.”
It comes after weeks of intense online speculation about Kate’s whereabouts and health. The 42-year-old has only been seen in public three times since undergoing abdominal surgery in January when cancer was discovered.
Conspiracy theories about Kate spread further online after William briefly missed the memorial service for his godfather, the late King Constantine of Greece, on February 27 due to personal reasons. Now it’s revealed that the prince withdrew from the event after his wife’s diagnosis.
After multiple international news organizations pulled her official family Mother’s Day photo, the princess sparked more rumors after admitting she “edited” the photo.
However, Kate’s announcement that she had cancer sparked an outpouring of sympathy from around the world and went some way to ending the spread of bizarre claims.
A Kensington Palace spokesman said the princess and her husband had been “deeply moved” by the public response to the news of her health.
“The Prince and Princess have been deeply touched by the message of goodwill from people in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world in response to their Royal Highnesses’ message,” the statement said.
“They have been overwhelmed by the public’s enthusiasm and support and appreciate the understanding of their privacy request at this time.”
Over the weekend, Kate, William and their children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – were absent from the royal family’s traditional Easter Sunday service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, which was attended by King Charles and the Queen. The crowd applauded. After attending Mass.
The monarch announced in February that he had also been diagnosed with cancer while undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate.
Following Kate’s announcement, Charles was said to be “proud” of his “beloved” daughter-in-law’s “courage” to speak about her diagnosis, with the pair remaining in close contact during her treatment.
The royal family faces an uncertain period as both the head of state and future queen undergo undisclosed cancer treatment, but the monarchy is expected to rally around the institution’s core figures.
