Geneva, Switzerland:

An avalanche in the luxury Swiss ski resort of Zermatt killed three people, including a 15-year-old boy from the United States, police said on Tuesday.

Wallis Regional Police said in a statement that two other people killed in Monday’s avalanche “are still being identified.”

“Regarding the female victim, we have no information as of yet that would identify her.”

A massive avalanche struck the restricted area of Zermatt in southern Switzerland shortly after 2:00 pm (1200 GMT), prompting an immediate and extensive search despite severe weather.

Of the four people rescued from the snow, only one, a 20-year-old Swiss man, was airlifted to hospital in serious condition.

Authorities have warned that there is a serious risk of avalanches in the southern Swiss Alps in recent days due to heavy snow and strong winds.

According to the WSL Snow and Avalanche Research Institute, about 17 people have been killed in avalanches in Switzerland since October 1 last year.

During this period, a total of 147 avalanche-related accidents occurred, involving 197 people.
