Arvind Kejriwal jailed after probe agency claims he was 'uncooperative'

The ED said Arvind Kejriwal’s custody may be needed again in the future.

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will spend the next two weeks in jail in connection with the liquor policy case after his Enforcement Directorate custody ends today. The probe agency did not seek the AAP leader’s detention, following which a local court this morning sent him to jail till April 15.

The court also allowed him to meet his wife Sunita Kejriwal and ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj before he was shifted to Tihar jail.

Mr Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in connection with the liquor policy scam after resisting nine summons from central agencies and has been running the administration from ED custody ever since.

Appearing before Kejriwal at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court this morning ahead of the expiry of the probe agency’s custody, the Education Ministry said he had been “uncooperative” and had given evasive answers. The ED told the court he did not reveal the passwords to his digital devices.

The central agency is investigating money laundering allegations in connection with the liquor policy scam and said his guardianship may be needed again in the future.

The agency said Kejriwal had given false evidence against other AAP members and said he was confused when faced with statements from his own party leaders. He also said that AAP communications chief Vijay Nair, who had become the approver, did not report to him but to Messrs. Atishi and Bhardwaj, according to the education ministry.

The chief minister also moved the Delhi High Court against his arrest, saying the investigating agency violated his fundamental rights. The court has issued a notice to the ED, asking it to respond by April 2. The hearing will resume on April 3.

Mr Kejriwal is the third AAP leader to be arrested in the liquor policy case after former deputy Manish Sisodia and Union House member Sanjay Singh. He called the arrest a “political conspiracy.”

He also spoke at the last hearing and claimed he had not been proven guilty in court. “The CBI submitted 31,000 pages (chargesheet) and the ED submitted 25,000 pages. Even if you read them together…the question remains…why was I arrested?” he had said.

The excise policy was introduced to overhaul Delhi’s liquor industry but was scrapped after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a probe into alleged irregularities in the policy.

The education ministry argued that the policy provided high profit margins and slush funds were allegedly used to fund AAP’s election campaigns.
