Angela Rayner said she would “do the right thing and resign” if police discovered she had committed a crime during an investigation into her previous living arrangements.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed earlier today that it was re-examining claims that information given by the Labor deputy leader a decade ago about his living situation may have breached electoral laws.

The decision came after Conservative MP James Daly informed police of neighbours’ claims which allegedly contradicted statements by the Labor deputy leader. Labor’s deputy leader says the property she lived in in Stockport before becoming an MP was her main residence and not her husband’s – a claim some believe.

Conservative MP James Daly informed GMP of neighbors’ claims that allegedly contradicted Ms Rayner’s claims that her property – which was separate from her then-husband’s – was her main residence.

In a new statement following the police action, Ms Rayner said she welcomed meetings with the relevant authorities, including HMRC and police, “to establish the facts and draw a line on the matter”.

She said she was “completely confident that I have followed the rules.”

“I have always said that integrity and accountability are important in politics,” she continued.

“That is why it is important that this issue is studied independently and urgently, without political interference.”

She added: “I make no apology for holding Tory ministers to account in the past. In fact, the public rightly expected me to do so as deputy leader of the opposition.

“We’ve seen the Conservatives use this playbook before – reporting political opponents to the police during the election campaign to distract from their record.

“I will say as I have before – if I had committed a criminal offence, of course I would do the right thing and stand down. The British public deserve politicians who know the rules apply to them.

“The issues raised relate to a period before I became an MP and I have set out my family’s circumstances and taken expert tax and legal advice. I look forward to setting out the facts to the relevant authorities at the earliest opportunity.”
