Al Jazeera reporter by day, Hamas leader by night: Israel’s latest accusations

This is not the first time that Al Jazeera journalists have been charged by the IDF.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have accused a well-known journalist who regularly reports from Gaza for Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV station of moonlighting as a senior Hamas commander. Lieutenant Avicai Adraj, the Israeli Arabic-language spokesman for the IDF, claimed on social media that the IDF had found a laptop purportedly belonging to Mohammad Varsha in the northern Gaza Strip.

According to Adlay, the laptop contained photos purportedly proving Varsha’s involvement as a senior Hamas military operative. The images depict the 32-year-old journalist operating a variety of weapons, including rocket-propelled grenade devices and armed drones, similar to those used by Hamas fighters during the Oct. 7 attack. Other photos allegedly show Varsha engaging in activities related to the development of aviation weapons by Palestinian groups.

An IDF intelligence analysis of the seized laptops allegedly showed links between Washakh and its alleged Hamas activities.

Taking to social media, the IDF told Al Jazeera directly, “Hey Al Jazeera, we believe that you journalists should provide unbiased coverage of the situation and not be actively involved in creating Hamas terrorists on the front lines.”

Varsha, a native of Gaza, has appeared as a journalist on several Al Jazeera radio programs and in some online reports in recent months. This is not the first time an Al Jazeera reporter has been accused by the IDF of having links to Palestinian militant groups. The IDF has previously highlighted similar allegations against other individuals associated with the media organization.
