After Indian student's death in US, government explains steps taken

The US remains the preferred destination for Indian students to pursue higher education

New Delhi:

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today said the government has stepped up student outreach efforts in the United States to guide and reassure Indian and Indian-origin students following a number of recent student deaths.

A 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who moved to the United States in 2023 to pursue a master’s degree at Cleveland State University, was found dead earlier this week. The incident marks another in a long line of deaths involving Indian and Indian-origin students in the United States.

“Some unfortunate incidents have occurred leading to the death of Indian students in the United States. These cases are under investigation. The embassy and consulates have provided all possible assistance,” the Ministry of External Affairs said today.

“Such cases are properly handled by US authorities in pursuit of justice. We have also stepped up outreach to students to provide them with guidance and assure them of the support of the embassy and consulates at all times,” the MEA said.

Since January this year, 11 Indians and students of Indian origin have died in the United States.

The United States remains the top destination for Indian students seeking higher education. According to the United States, more than 260,000 Indian students will come to the country in the 2022-2023 school year. This is a 35% increase from the previous trading day.
