With just one win from eight matches, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are on the verge of an early exit from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Just one more defeat in the remaining campaign could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the Faf du Plessis-led side. But, it is not just this season that RCB have struggled to produce attacking performances, this has been their story for most part of their IPL history. Former Australia captain Aaron Finch, who played for RCB in the past, explained the main reasons for the franchise’s consistent poor performance in the T20 league. (IPL 2024 points table)

In a show on Star Sports, Finch cited the auction strategy as one of the biggest reasons behind the poor performance of the Bengaluru team in the IPL. Finch highlighted how the RCB management spends heavily on batsmen while leaving very little budget for a top bowler, especially a spinner.

“I think there are a few reasons why it hasn’t gone well, and I think it starts with the auction table when you put so much emphasis on your batting group and don’t leave a huge amount of space for yourself.” Bowling. I think there is a lack of a world-class spinner and it was proved in the game against KKR, Sunil Narine is a world-class operator and he is someone who gets the job done day in and day out. It’s just the lack of a spinner who needs to be trusted consistently,” said Aaron Finch.

Finch also questioned the team management’s decision to play Cameron Green in the middle despite knowing that it is not the best position for the Australian all-rounder.

“I think sometimes they have some issues playing players out of position, I mean getting Cameron Green at such a big price, for such a big percentage of the salary cap, then getting him to bat in the middle order. Where batting at the top is not that comfortable, it’s a really weird move to ask a guy to do something he’s not comfortable with to begin with. Are not set up for ultimate success,” Finch stressed.

RCB, which is at the bottom in the points table of 10 teams, needs a miracle from here to enter the playoffs.
