Ms Colledge was referred for further investigation but before she could go the pain became severe. She then had an ultrasound, which revealed a cyst in her stomach. She was eventually diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Ms Colledge said: “When I was first diagnosed I was doubting if I would live to see my 24th birthday or if I would die tomorrow. But my willpower was very strong. I was stubborn and I told myself now It’s not my time to leave and I’m making sure of that.”

“It had spread to my stomach and stomach lining. The cyst was so big they couldn’t see anything else because it had started to crush my kidneys. I thought I was too young to have ovarian cancer. This is not Common. But it’s true,” she added.

She then underwent a five-and-a-half-hour operation to remove the cyst and the ovary attached to it. She also underwent another surgery that lasted more than nine hours and included a hysterectomy, as well as the removal of her appendix, spleen and part of her intestines. subway.

In addition, she underwent six rounds of chemotherapy at the Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. Her last chemotherapy session was in 2023, and scans since then have shown no sign of the cancer returning.

The Teenage Cancer Trust says ovarian cancer is increasingly common among young people. The trust said: “It’s a good idea to know the symptoms of ovarian cancer, but remember that many conditions that are less serious than cancer can also cause these symptoms.”

Ms Colledge is now using her experience to raise awareness of the issue and asking young women to be aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Symptoms include pain around the pelvis and abdomen, bloating, and difficulty eating because you feel full quickly.
