Modders are working on porting GTA 5 to Android, Nintendo Switch and Linux

Since its release in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V has enjoyed longevity across multiple platforms. Driven by the popularity of GTA Online, GTA 5 continues to attract players on PlayStation, Xbox consoles and PC. However, before the release of GTA 6 next year, GTA 5 may be open to more players on mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch platform, but it has not been officially launched. Third-party developers are reportedly working on Android, Linux, and Nintendo Switch ports of the game.

Grand Theft Auto news portal GTA Focal (@GTAFocal) claimed in an X post last week that a group of modders are trying to port GTA 5 to Nintendo Switch, Linux and Android. This new development is reportedly the result of a GTA 5 source code leak last December.

“Due to source code leaks in December, a group of modders are trying to port GTA 5 to Nintendo Switch, Linux and Android,” the post said. The video and screenshots attached to the post show the GTA 5 loading screen on Nintendo Switch and Android, It contains error messages. The leak suggests that the port is not yet fully functional on the platform.

Efforts to port GTA 5 to Android and Nintendo Switch have been led by modders and third-party developers. Rockstar Games has yet to announce a port of GTA 5 on these platforms. The developer released an “expanded and enhanced” version of GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in 2022, bringing visual and performance improvements to current consoles.

In December 2023, Rockstar Games suffered a hacker attack and leaked the entire source code of “GTA 5”. The leak also includes GTA 6 code and files for the rumored sequel to the company’s 2006 game Bully.

As of February 2024, GTA 5 has Sell Global circulation exceeds 195 million copies. The game originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 and is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The highly anticipated sequel “GTA 6” released a trailer in December last year and was confirmed to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in 2025.
