The tweet sparked debate over airplane etiquette and personal space.

While traveling by plane, passengers should follow some basic etiquette and try their best not to bother or disturb anyone sitting around them. However, a recent airline passenger in the United States became angry when another passenger sat directly behind him on his nearly empty Southwest flight. On Wednesday on X (formerly Twitter), Washington-based chef Anthony Thomas shared his ordeal with a selfie with a man sitting right behind him on the nearly empty plane. Mr Thomas captioned the post, “Imagine the luxury of boarding a flight with only two passengers. Of all the seats on the flight, look where she decided to sit.”

Since being shared, Mr Thomas’ post has been viewed more than 37 million times. The tweet also sparked debate over airplane etiquette and personal space in the comments.

“This is the same guy who doesn’t try to eavesdrop during work hours by leaving behind 30 empty urinals,” one user commented. Another said, “Honestly, I would have left. Dude is weird and I don’t want him to follow me just because of that.”

Some users also believed that the man’s behavior was strange considering how empty the plane was, while others were not so quick to take Mr. Thomas’ side.

One user wrote: “It doesn’t matter my friend. Lean right back. It’s his fault.” Another said, “I’m counting 5 passengers total, but yes, she should find another seat.”

However, one user said, “The guy’s probably scared of flying, instead of being super creepy just ask him to sit in the same row, maybe you’ll make a friend,” while another said, “I’m sorry, but Please forgive me if I board the flight empty.” “I don’t even sit alone.. it’s scary.” Another said, “I go to my assigned seat before I start looking for an empty seat that is more comfortable.”

According to Independent, the flight appears to be a Southwest airliner, which operates an open seating policy. This means that passengers flying with the airline can choose any open seat after boarding the plane in their group number.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that a social media post has sparked a discussion on airplane etiquette. Earlier, an airline passenger had sparked online debate by sharing a photo of a passenger wearing his shoe under his seat. “Don’t be this person,” the Redditor captioned the photo, which was taken by a friend during a recent unidentified flight.

In this photo the passenger’s space is being violated by the sock-clad feet of the flyer sitting behind them. It also showed that the flyer’s foot was touching the photographer’s sneakers. Social media users immediately reacted and held the culprit’s toes to the fire.
