A magnitude 6 earthquake hit Japan the day after the Taiwan earthquake

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck the east coast of the Fukushima region of Honshu, Japan, on Thursday. Just one day ago, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred in Taiwan, Japan’s neighboring country. Nine people died and more than a thousand were injured.

The EMSC said the quake was at a depth of 32 kilometers (19.88 miles).

The Straits Times reported that Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, said “no unusual conditions were detected” at the plant site or elsewhere in the area.

After an earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday, Japanese authorities said a tsunami of about 1 foot was detected on Yonaguni Island about 15 minutes after the quake struck. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that a tsunami of up to 3 meters was expected to reach the country’s southwest coast.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, this is the first tsunami warning issued in Okinawa in 26 years. The last tsunami warning issued was in 1998 after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in southern Ishigaki Island.

An earthquake struck Taiwan at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday (local time), with its epicenter in the mountainous countryside of Hualien County. Buildings in the capital Taipei shook violently, while buildings in Hualien tilted severely and had their ground floors crushed. Nearly a dozen hotel workers have been found, but as many as 38 people are still missing.
