A 35-year-old farmer was attacked and killed by a wild elephant in Telangana’s Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district on Wednesday, the forest department said.

They said the incident took place on the outskirts of Burepalli village in Chinthalamanepally mandal of the district when the victim was working in the fields.

“This is the first time a wild elephant has entered Telangana from Maharashtra… There are no wild elephants in Telangana. It seems that 70-75 elephants are coming to Maharashtra The other side of the river Pranahita in Terabang moved. One of the elephants, a male Tusk, crossed into Pranahita and strayed into Telangana,” a senior forest department official told news agency PTI .

“Our Maharashtra counterparts had informed us of the movement (of the elephants) in advance and we were keeping a watch. We have asked the villagers not to venture to that side. Despite our warning, some people were going The field was attacked by elephants. The elephant died,” the official said.

Forest officials have cordoned off the entire area to ensure that elephants do not enter the village, he said.
