30-year-old woman still in ICU after jumping from building to escape Delhi fire: Police

One of the two women who jumped from the fourth floor of a building to escape the fire in Dwarka is still in the ICU, her condition is critical and she has suffered multiple fractures, a police officer said on Thursday.

Two women jumped from the balcony after a fire broke out in a flat in Sector 10, Dwarka on Tuesday.

83-year-old Jasuri Devi died in the fall, while her 30-year-old granddaughter Pooja Pant was seriously injured.

Police had earlier said that when the fire broke out, both Jasuri Devi and Pooja Pant took shelter in the balcony of the flat and screamed for help.

A local present at the spot said that after hearing their screams, residents arranged bedsheets and mattresses to help them land safely.

“Pooja jumped first but got hurt as she hit the third and second floors before landing on the ground. However, when Jasuri Devi jumped, she fell hard on the ground and people could not hold the bedsheet properly ” Said.

Police said they have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and investigation is underway.

Initial investigation revealed that Pooja’s father Mahesh Pant had gone to the market to buy medicines. Due to the smoke, Pooja and Devi took shelter on the balcony and jumped to save their lives. Pooja’s condition is said to be serious. He is still in the ICU,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh had said on Tuesday.

Pooja and her husband Yogesh work in Japan and the couple came to India two months ago. Police said that Yogesh was not at home at the time of the incident and had gone to Noida to meet his parents.
