Aizawl:

A 28-year-old election security guard in Mizoram state died of cardiac arrest on Friday, officials said.

Lalrinpuia, a member of the Indian Reserve Battalion 2 (IRBn), was found dead at Vangchhia polling station in Champhai district on Friday morning when other security personnel tried to wake him up, they said.

Officials said he died of cardiac arrest at around 4.45am.

They said his body was taken to his native village Kawlkulh in Khawzawl district after a post-mortem examination was conducted at Champhai district hospital.

Champhai Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer James Lalrinchhana and Champhai Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Kumar were present at the farewell ceremony.

James expressed his condolences to the families and said state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas had been informed of the incident.

James added that benefits allowed for people who die as a result of the polls will be released to the family of that person at the earliest.

Kumar also said that Lallimpuya’s untimely death was a huge loss to the state police force.

Lallimpuya was born in April 1996 and joined the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) in January 2018.

The first phase of elections to Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha seat took place on Friday.
