Brussels:
Two people were killed Sunday when a light plane attempting to land in high winds collided with a car at an airport in eastern Belgium, police said.
The landing failed and the plane collided with a car parked on the road near the aerodrome at Spa, causing both vehicles to catch fire, local police commander Jean-Michel Lejeune told AFP.
“Unfortunately, two people died on the plane,” Lejeune told AFP. “Looks like it was a failed landing.”
The official said the pilot was German but investigation into the nationality of the passenger was ongoing.
According to media reports, the driver of the vehicle fortunately had stepped out to smoke a cigarette – which certainly saved his life.
Belgian media images showed thick black smoke billowing near the runway and charred car parts as emergency vehicles were blocked off the roads.
Environmental protection officials are also reportedly on the scene to ensure there is no contamination in the water from the famous spring bottled at the spa.
