Social media platforms YouTube and Facebook are the most commonly used online platforms among U.S. adults, according to a report Thursday.

According to Pew Research Center survey results, approximately eight in 10 U.S. adults (83%) say they have used YouTube.

Facebook, with 68% of its user base, is also the dominant player online, while 47% of U.S. adults say they use Instagram. The center’s recent findings also show that YouTube dominates the social media landscape among U.S. teens.

“YouTube and Facebook are the only two platforms used by the majority of people of all ages. Still, there is a large age gap between the youngest and oldest adults when it comes to using YouTube. However, , the age gap is much smaller on Facebook,” Jeffrey Gottfried, deputy director of research at the Pew Research Center, said in the report.

The findings, based on a survey of 5,733 U.S. adults conducted from May to September 2023, show that TikTok’s user base, which some members of Congress had previously called for a ban, has grown since 2021.

One-third of U.S. adults (33%) use video-based platforms, a 12-point increase from 2021 (21%).

About 27% to 35% of U.S. adults also use Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Snapchat.

In addition, about one in five also said they use X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit.

In addition, the report found significant age differences among users of Instagram (78%), Snapchat (65%) and TikTok (62%), with the majority of users on these platforms being adults under 30 years old.

“Americans ages 30 to 49 stand out for their high frequency of use of three platforms: LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Facebook. For example, 40% of people in this age group use LinkedIn, higher than those ages 18 to 29 and 50 to 64 About three in 10 people in the age group said the same. And only 12% of people 65 and older said the same,” Gottfried said.

The report also shows that women are more likely than men to use Pinterest (50% vs. 19%), TikTok (40% vs. 25%) and Instagram (54% vs. 39%).
