Former British and Commonwealth champion boxer Willie Limond has died aged 45.

It is understood he fell ill while preparing for the match earlier this month.

His son Jack posted on Instagram on Monday: “My dad passed away around 3am.

“He lasted almost 10 days. Warrior.”

The Scot won 42 of 48 professional fights from 1999 to 2023, 13 of which were by knockout.

He won the EBU EU Super Featherweight Championship in 2004, the Commonwealth Lightweight Championship from 2006 to 2007, the Commonwealth Super Lightweight Championship from 2013 to 2014, and the British Super Lightweight Championship in 2014.

Limond started out as a footballer, making five appearances for Albion Rovers in the late 1990s.

His boxing club St Andrew’s Sports Club wrote in a statement: “Everyone at St Andrew’s Sports Club is shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Willie Limond.

“Willie was not only a legend of the sport but an infectious character who will be deeply missed by all of us.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time.”

Former rival Curtis Woodhouse was also among those paying tribute.

Woodhouse, who was beaten by Limond in a 2014 British light welterweight title fight at Glasgow’s Brayhead Arena, posted on X: “Hearing the news that Willie Limond has passed away I was shocked, he was a great boxer and a great man.

“We stayed in touch after the game and always had a laugh together. Very sad. Rest in peace, champ.”
