Hours after Manohar Lal Khattar resigned as Haryana chief minister, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced Nayab Singh Saini for the top post.
Here are 5 facts about the new Haryana Chief Minister
Mr. Saini is the Lok Sabha Member from Kurukshetra and hails from the OBC community. He was appointed as Haryana BJP president in October last year and is said to be close to outgoing chief minister Khattar.
Mr. Saini’s political career began nearly three decades ago when he worked to strengthen the BJP’s organization in Haryana. In 2002, he was promoted to the district secretary of the Ambala youth branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was appointed district president in 2005.
He has worked with various sections of the party, including Kisan Morcha, a farmers’ organization, as the party’s state secretary. In 2012, he was elected as the Chairman of the Ambala Regional Party to lead the party.
After holding several positions at the organizational level, he was elected as Narayangal MLA in the 2014 state polls. In 2016, he was appointed Minister of State.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Mr Saini was contested from Kurukshetra constituency. He defeated Congress MP Nirmal Singh by nearly 400,000 votes.
